Cong slams removal of MLA from House panel
Jaipur, May 18 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday questioned assembly speaker Vasudev Devnani's decision to remove a Congress MLA as head of the assembly's Privilege Committee, saying he was demeaning his post by taking partial decisions.
Gehlot's comments came after Congress MLA from Taranagar Narendra Budhania, who was made head of the state assembly's Privilege Committee by Devnani, was removed within 15 days.
In a tweet on X, Gehlot wrote, "Assembly speaker Vasudev Devnani is continuously taking decisions that are not impartial and are demeaning his post. Devnani had suspended six Congress MLAs. He then made unparliamentary remarks against Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasara in the assembly in his absence."
The former CM pointed out that Devnani had not disqualified BJP MLA from Anta Kanwarlal Meena, even 17 days after the high court upheld a lower court order sentencing the MLA to three year imprisonment on May 1, 2025.
"Naresh Budhania was made chairperson of the Privilege Committee on April 30 but within 15 days he has been removed. The term of the heads of the committee is at least one year. This is perhaps the first time in the assembly that a committee head has been removed in 15 days," he said.
Gehlot added that the decision by Devnani has put a question mark on his impartiality and urged the speaker to reconsider the decisions and act as per the traditions of the assembly.
Rasing concerns over the removal of Budhania, leader of opposition Tikaram Jully in a release said: "The assembly secretariat released a bulletin which referred to amended in the appointments of heads of committees. This is against the constitutional tradition of the state assembly."
He said Budhania was removed as head of the Privilege Committee within 15 days and made head of the Committee on Welfare of Backward Classes which is against the tradition of the assembly as well as a breach of privilege of the MLA.
In response, BJP chief whip in the assembly Jogeshwar Garg said while he was not aware of the matter, the change could have happened because there were more Congress members on the committee.
"I am not aware of the matter. I am in Jalore. But the tradition is that there are 15 members in the Privilege Committee. The number of members the BJP and Congress in the committee will be according to their strength in the House. Maybe the number of Congress members was more and so a member had to be removed. But that is my conjecture," he said....
