Cong MLA injured in protest clash, 12 held
Jaipur, Dec. 11 -- Congress MLA Abhimanyu Poonia was injured on Wednesday after a massive clash that erupted between the police and farmers who broke the wall of an under-construction Ethanol factory in Hanumangarh that was allegedly causing pollution to the agriculture fields.
According to the officials, the incident took place at around 4pm on Wednesday. The protest was led by Congress and CPI(M).
The locals farmers in the area have been protesting against the construction of this ethanol factory in the district's Rathikhera village under Tibbi sub division. "This factory will cause severe air and water pollution, groundwater depletion, and adverse effects on agriculture in the vicinity. Hence, the farmers have been protesting against it for over the last 15 months and demanding the government to immediately close it," said the Congress MP from Sriganganagar, Kuldeep Indora who was one of the leaders in the protest.
On Wednesday, a delegate of the protesting farmers along with Indora and Poonia reached the SDM office to discuss. "The administration said that they will look into the matter. But when we asked for a written statement that they will close the project, officials refused. Following the development, we have decided to gather and start protesting but police unleashed force. Our MLA Abhimanyu Poonia got injured...," he said.
Poonia was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he underwent a CT Scan.
Officials said the farmers, after the meeting with the SDM, reached the factory with hundreds of tractors through which they broke a wall of the factory.
Hanumangarh SP, Hari Shankar, said, "The police immediately reached the spot and used mild force to stop them. The area comes under Section 163 which has been enforced since November 18 anticipating some tension. In response, the farmers torched four vehicles and also started pelting stones at us injuring four of our cops. In retaliation, we also used tear gas to disperse the crowd." He said 12 people were detained and internet connection has also been suspended in the area....
