Cong boycotts meet on assembly session
Jaipur, Aug. 29 -- The state Congress on Thursday boycotted the all-party meeting convened by assembly speaker Vasudev Devnani ahead of the fourth Assembly session starting from September 1, sharpening the political tussle between the BJP and the Congress in the state.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully accused the BJP government of deliberately curtailing legislative accountability and undermining democratic values.
Jully said that while the speaker wanted a longer assembly session, the BJP government was keen to wrap it up quickly to avoid scrutiny. He alleged that several incidents in the House reflected a one-sided approach, including the removal of senior Congress MLA Narendra Budhania from the chairmanship of the privileges committee just days after his appointment.
Raising further concerns, Jully pointed out that replies to assembly questions, which were earlier uploaded on a public portal for transparency, were not made available this time.
He also alleged that elected Congress Panchayat and municipal heads were being systematically removed, citing a recent remark by a BJP MLA claiming that all Congress-backed heads in the chief minister's home district had been replaced with BJP-supported ones.
"This shows the government has no faith in democracy," Jully said, adding that Panchayati Raj and municipal elections were being delayed under legal pretexts.
He also accused the government of stalling student union elections, ignoring farmers' struggles to access fertilizers like DAP, and prioritizing lavish projects such as a Rs.3,500-crore convention centre in Jaipur over repairing collapsing school buildings.
Jully contrasted this with the Congress government's approach in 2020 when the then chief minister convened a meeting of all 200 MLAs and 25 MPs to listen to their concerns.
"Here, only BJP legislators, MPs, and even defeated candidates are being consulted, while the Opposition's voice is silenced," he said.
Announcing the boycott, Jully confirmed that the Congress will participate in the Assembly's opening day proceedings.
A Congress Legislature Party meeting is scheduled for September 2, where senior leaders including the party in-charge, state president, and former chief ministers will decide the Congress party's future strategy
Commenting on the issue, parliamentary affairs minister Jogaram Patel said, "We want to run the assembly smoothly and peacefully, and all efforts will be made in this direction. The meeting attended by BJP MLAs and MPs recently (at CM residence) was convened by the party organisation, not the state government."
Patel also said on Thursday that several key bills, including those related to religious conversion, universities, and amendments to the law on MLAs' pensions, are likely to be introduced during the upcoming monsoon session of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to begin from September 1....
