BARMER, June 22 -- Rajasthan chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma marked the 11th International Yoga Day with a grand state-level event on the majestic sand dunes of Khudi in Jaisalmer, where he performed yoga along with thousands of participants. The event also featured a live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address from Visakhapatnam, which emphasised yoga's role in uniting the world. Addressing the gathering, chief minister Sharma said that Rajasthan ranked first in the country with over 2.25 lakh registrations for the Yoga Sangam program. He emphasised that this year's theme reflects the deep connection between personal health and environmental wellness. "Yoga is a gift of Indian civilization to the world," said CM Sharma. "It is not just meditation but a complete system for healing physical ailments." He described yoga as a means to unify the body, mind, intellect, and soul. "Yoga leads us to health in an age of stress, pollution, and irregular lifestyles. It is the union of thought and action, restraint and achievement." The CM further said that yoga has always been an integral part of India's ancient culture. "Lord Shiva is considered the Adi Guru of yoga. From the time of Maharshi Patanjali to present-day yoga masters, this tradition has been preserved and shared with the world." CM Sharma credited Prime Minister Modi for transforming Yoga Day into an international celebration. "It was PM Modi who proposed the idea at the UN General Assembly in 2014, and now the world celebrates June 21 as International Yoga Day. His belief that yoga is a journey from illness to wellness, and from 'me' to 'we,' has resonated globally." Sharma also praised PM Modi for reviving Indian cultural values globally. "From the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya to the revitalization of Kashi Vishwanath, Mahakal Lok in Ujjain, and Kedarnath-Badrinath under the Char Dham Project, our sacred sites are being restored. Inspired by PM Modi, we are investing Rs.100 crore to develop major religious sites in Rajasthan, including Tanot Mata and Ramdevra temples." Sharma also spoke about the state's ambitious "Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan," run from June 5 to 20, aiming to raise awareness about water and environmental conservation.
