Jodhpur, June 10 -- An anti-encroachment drive in the Ummed Sagar Dam area of Jodhpur on Monday escalated into violence as locals pelted stones at teams from the Municipal Corporation and police, officials aware of the matter said, adding that over 50 people have been detained. Over 12 police and civic body personnel were injured, with two sustaining serious head injuries, they added. Protesters also vandalised four bulldozers and a car, police said. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Rajarshi Raj Verma said that when police and municipal teams arrived in the morning to remove encroachments, some individuals began pelting stones. Police are identifying and detaining those involved in the stone-pelting, he added, assuring strict action against all involved in the violence. In response to the volatile situation, over 10 police stations' personnel were deployed to the site. The anti-encroachment drive followed a letter from Soorsagar MLA Devendra Joshi to the chief minister, requesting action against encroachments around Ummed Sagar. Previously, 103 encroachments had been removed in a joint operation by the Jodhpur Development Authority, police, and the Public Health Engineering Department. An official familiar with the matter said that a recent survey identified an additional 229 encroachments, and the operation to remove them began on Monday.
