Chemical waste crisis forces evacuation alert
BARMER, July 30 -- For over 15 years, villages in Rajasthan's Balotra district have been grappling with a silent environmental disaster as toxic, polluted water from Jodhpur's industrial units continues to flow toward Doli, Araba and other nearby villages, contaminating land and water sources. Despite repeated complaints and appeals, the administration and government have failed to implement a permanent solution.
The crisis reached a breaking point on Tuesday when the Gram Panchayats of Araba Dudawanta and Doli Rajguru, under Kalyanpur Panchayat Samiti, issued notices to residents, warning them to evacuate immediately. The notice reads that the intensifying flow of chemical-laden water from Jodhpur could soon flood homes, and those refusing to vacate would bear full responsibility for any loss of life or property.
Village Development Officer Bhimaram Devpal, who released the order said that the flow of chemical water from Jodhpur has intensified and is seeping into residential areas. Based on oral instructions from higher authorities, the Panchayat issued a notice urging villagers to immediately move to safer areas.
Responding to the issue, Balotra District Collector Susheel Kumar Yadav told HT, "The language used in the letter is factually incorrect." Yadav clarified that there is no evacuation of the entire village, adding that only a few individuals might be affected by the water flow from Jodhpur. "For them, we have arranged some shelter houses and appealed to them to take necessary precautions," he said....
