Jaipur, July 4 -- Amid political opposition to the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive - especially in Bihar and from the parties belonging to the INDIA bloc - Rajasthan's chief electoral officer (CEO) Naveen Mahajan will chair a video conference on Friday to review the state's preparedness for the exercise, people aware of the matter said. The meeting will take place at 10am and will be attended by all the district election officers (DEOs) and deputy DEOs across the state, they added. "The Election Commission of India is conducting the SIR across the country, and a calendar for its implementation will be released soon," a senior official of the election department said on condition of anonymity. The objective of the intensified revision is to ensure that the names of all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll, so as to enable them to exercise their franchise, and also to introduce complete transparency in the process of addition or deletion of electors in the electoral rolls. The last intensive revision for Bihar was held by the commission in 2002, said the official. Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi said that under the BJP's rule, democracy is being attacked every day. "The assembly and Lok Sabha elections have recently concluded - what is the need for a revision exercise immediately after that?" Opposition parties on Wednesday submitted a strong objection to the ECI's decision to conduct a SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Leaders from 11 INDIA bloc parties, including Congress, RJD, CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML)-Liberation, NCP-SP, and Samajwadi Party, met chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Nirvachan Sadan and warned that the move could disproportionately impact the marginalised communities.
