Celebs stir controversy at BMC polls
India, Jan. 17 -- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections held on Thursday saw a high celebrity turnout. However, while many stars cast their votes smoothly, others made headlines for more controversial reasons.
Actor-politician Hema Malini faced the wrath of frustrated voters at her polling station. Bystanders, who had been waiting in queues for hours, confronted the actor for allegedly receiving preferential treatment.
As Hema spoke to the media, a citizen shouted, "We've been here for the last 60 years, and there is chaos here for the first time. I have been here since 7.45am, and it was at 9.30am when I voted. Nobody is accountable!"The actor signalled a member of her team to handle the situation rather than engaging directly. The incident sparked a debate online; while many criticised her for bypassing the queue, others defended her, citing her status as a senior citizen.
After casting his vote, actor Aamir Khan found himself stepping into the ongoing Marathi vs Hindi language debate. Speaking to the media, the actor urged the people of Mumbai to step out and vote in the civic elections while also lauding the smooth polling arrangements. As he delivered his message in Marathi, a few members of the media requested him to repeat it in Hindi. "Hindi mein? Yeh Maharashtra hai, bhai," Aamir responded to the query with a smile.
