Carcasses of two chinkaras found, locals stage protests
Barmer, June 1 -- Protests continued in Barmer district after carcasses of two Chinkaras were found in plastic sacks, police said, adding that several suspects have been detained for questioning.
"On Friday evening, some locals found two Chinkaras were found packed in plastic sacks under a bridge in Chohtan block. After receiving information, police and forest department officials, including Chohtan circle officer Jeevanlal Khatri, station house officer Rajuram Bamaniya and forest ranger Surendra Kumar reached the site," said Jeevanlal Khatr, circle officer.
"On the basis of a complaint filed by wildlife activist Jagdish Dhaka, a case has been registered under Wildlife Protection Act. Meanwhile, the locals have accused the forest department of negligence and slow response, alleging that poachers escaped with other Chinkara carcasses after being alerted by the villagers' presence," the official said.
Protesters, including Mahant Jagdishpuri Maharaj, local representatives, and members of the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha, have vowed to continue their agitation until all culprits are arrested and the entire poaching and illegal meat supply network is exposed. They also demanded a thorough investigation into hotels and eateries suspected of serving deer meat.
"Several suspects have been detained for questioning and are scanning CCTV footage from hotels, roadside eateries, and nearby homes. They are also inspecting footprints and other forensic clues from the scene," the police said....
