Broken Ambedkar portrait in Barmer village sparks row
Barmer, April 29 -- Tension gripped Adel village in Rajasthan's Barmer district after a portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar at a local circle was found damaged on Monday night, sparking protests from enraged residents, police said. Police suspect a vehicle hit the structure and are working to trace it.
According to the police, the railing at Adel Circle and the Ambedkar portrait mounted on was found broken and lying on the ground. Locals gathered at the site upon receiving information, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. They staged a protest and even set up a tent for a sit-in.
Sadar police rushed to the spot to pacify the crowd. Barmer superintendent of police Choonaram Jat, assistant superintendent of police Nitesh Arya, and deputy superintendent of police Ramesh Kumar Sharma arrived to assess the situation. After nearly three hours of negotiations, the parties reached an agreement to rebuild the circle and install a new portrait under the supervision of a designated committee.
Police have launched an investigation, examining CCTV footage from nearby areas. Preliminary findings suggest the damage may have resulted from a vehicle collision. Authorities are working to identify the vehicle owner and ascertain whether the incident was intentional or accidental.
ASP Arya said, "Initial probe points towards a vehicle hitting the structure, leading to the damage. Efforts are underway to trace the vehicle, and the situation is now under control following discussions with protesters."
A committee comprising administrative officials, including the tehsildar and block development officer, has been formed to oversee the restoration. Following these assurances, the protesters called off their agitation, restoring normalcy to the area....
