Jaipur, Oct. 18 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Baran Panchayat Samiti Pradhan Morpal Suman as its candidate for the upcoming Anta assembly by-elections in Rajasthan. Suman, a local leader with a low-profile image, is seen as a strategic pick who fits well into the constituency's caste dynamics. The party finalized Suman's name after extensive deliberations, with all senior leaders eventually reaching a consensus. The Congress has fielded former minister Pramod Jain Bhaya, while Naresh Meena is contesting as an independent candidate, making a triangular contest likely on this seat. A senior party leader said former minister Prabhulal Saini was also among the contenders for the BJP ticket. Both he and Morpal Suman belong to the Saini community. Considering Anta's political arithmetic, party strategists deemed it necessary to nominate a candidate from this community. The decision, sources said, was influenced by internal feedback and the need for a locally acceptable face. Insiders believe that Prabhulal Saini's chances were weakened due to lack of support from former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and because he was seen as an outsider to the constituency. Another Ultimately, BJP decided to back local leader, and Morpal Suman - considered close to Vasundhara Raje - emerged as the consensus choice. Suman has previously served as vice-president of the Mali, Saini, Kushwaha, and Maurya community groups, and is currently president of the Samyukt Mali Mahasangh in Baran. His wife, Nati Bai, is the Sarpanch of Tisaya-Lisadiya Panchayat. The Anta seat fell vacant following the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meena, a staunch supporter of Vasundhara Raje. Meena lost his membership in May after being convicted in a 20-year-old case involving pointing a pistol at an SDM. As per the Election Commission's rules, the bypoll had to be conducted within six months of the vacancy. According to the final voter list published on October 1, the Anta constituency has 2,27,563 voters - 1,15,982 men, 1,10,241 women, and four from the third gender - reflecting an increase of 1,336 voters since the draft publication. Since forming the government, the BJP has contested seven bypolls in Rajasthan, winning five of them, while the Congress managed to secure only one seat. The ruling party had earlier captured seats in Khinwsar, Deoli-Uniara, Jhunjhunu, Ramgarh, and Salumber, while Congress and RLP (Rashtriya Loktantrik Party) faced significant setbacks. Before these bypolls, Congress held four of the seven seats; after the contests, it was left with just one. Though the Anta bypoll result will not directly impact the government's majority, political observers believe it will influence the public perception of the BJP government's performance. A victory here, they say, will be showcased as people's endorsement of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma's governance. However, a defeat could provide the opposition with ammunition to attack the ruling party. The Election Commission has announced that voting for the Anta Assembly bypoll will take place on November 11, with counting on November 14....
