BJP is undermining Constitution: Gehlot
Jaipur, June 27 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday launched a scathing attack on BJP, accusing the ruling party at the Centre of undermining the Constitution and democracy in the country. He described the current situation in the country as an "undeclared emergency".
The Congress leader said that over the past 11 years under the BJP rule, the Indian democracy "declined the most".
He said in a post on X, "It is ironic that BJP governments are observing 'Constitution Murder Day'. It is like a dishonest person giving lectures on honesty." Gehlot alleged that civil liberties, freedom of the press and opposition voices are being stifled in the country. "If democracy has declined the most in this country, it has happened in the last 11 years," he said.
"The current situation in India can be described in just two words - 'undeclared emergency'. The Constitution may not have been suspended nor has the President made any formal declaration, but people's rights, freedom of expression, and the voice of the opposition are being continuously suppressed," he said.
Citing cases against journalists like Siddique Kappan and raids on media houses, including NDTV, Dainik Bhaskar, BBC and NewsClick, the Congress leader said, "If this is not strangulation of press freedom, then what is?"
"Today, if a journalist asks questions, they are branded anti-national. If a student protests, they are called a terrorist. If an Opposition leader criticizes the government, they become a target of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Is this the BJP government's new model of democracy? This, in fact, is the true murder of democracy."
He also compared the present situation with the Emergency period (1975 to 1977), claiming that even then, no chief ministers were jailed or parliament memberships cancelled. "But under BJP rule, the CMs of Jharkhand and Delhi have been jailed. Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary membership was cancelled," he said.
Gehlot said, "Today, if any Opposition leader makes allegations against the government, their statements are not aired. But when the government responds to those allegations, the response is given prominent coverage - effectively attempting to discredit the original charges through media manipulation."
He said that over 200 opposition leaders faced ED actions, yet many of them were let off as soon as they joined the BJP.
He said that during the Emergency, no state government was toppled by "purchasing legislators". "But in the past 11 years, public mandate has been stolen and governments have been brought down in states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, and Manipur through horse-trading," Gehlot said.
"Spying on and tapping the phones of Opposition leaders has become a hobby for this government. Today, even husbands and wives fear speaking on normal calls and prefer FaceTime or WhatsApp, worried that someone might be listening in."
"We will not fear. We will not bow down. We will continue to fight to protect the Constitution, democracy, and the voice of the people," the Congress leader asserted.
BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "Gehlot might have remembered his own tenure and the infighting in his party over the CM's post. BJP government is going well under Sharma's leadership and will continue carrying it forward."...
