Bisalpur dam filled, gates may opened for first time in 21 years
Jaipur, July 22 -- Tonk's Bisalpur dam which is one of the major drinking water sources in Jaipur division, has almost reached the brim by Monday following which the district administration has started preparation to open its gates for the first time in the last 21 years, officials familiar with the matter said.
"Bisalpur usually overflows at the end of the monsoon. This is the first time in the last 21 years when the dam reached almost up to the brim in mid-July. We are expecting that it will be filled up in the next two to three days. We will then open its gates to release the excess water. This is a good signal for Jaipur for the upcoming summer," said Yogesh Mittal, chief engineer of the water resources department. He oversees the dam safety.
According to the data by the department, at least 94.19% of the Bisalpur dam was filled up by Monday which was only 82% on Sunday. The dam has a total capacity of 1095.840 mcm, of which 1032.182 mcm has already been filled up. Last year, there was only 324.500 mcm of water as of the same period (July 21), according to the data.
