Bharatpur: Farmers scramble for supplies amid fertiliser shortage

Bharatpur, Sept. 20 -- The Procurement and Sale Committee has received only 25% of fertilisers needed for farmers in Bharatpur compared to last year, officials aware of the matter said.
With wheat and mustard sowing scheduled to begin next month, farmers are scrambling for supplies. The Procurement and Sale Cooperative Society is responsible for distribution, but farmers line up as early as midnight to get fertilisers. Despite waiting until evening, many return home empty-handed.
Farmers alleged that while influential individuals manage to secure fertiliser easily, ordinary farmers continue to struggle. "We don't know how to prepare our crops without timely fertilisers," a farmer said.
Manish Sharma, manager of the Purchase and Sale Cooperative Society, said that on September 18, the committee received 1,900 fertiliser bags from IFFCO, distributed in batches of five per farmer. On Friday, another 600 bags arrived, distributed under police protection.
"The committee demands 7,000 bags per rack but receives only about 2,500," Sharma said, adding that around 50,000 bags are currently needed.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully on Friday slammed the state government over the fertiliser crisis, saying that the plight of farmers in CM Bhajanlal Sharma's home district Bharatpur reflects the government's biggest failure. "Farmers, already battered by excessive rains, are now struggling with a severe fertiliser shortage during the rabi sowing season. I even raised this issue in the Assembly, but the situation in the CM's own district has not improved. Farmers don't need police lathis, they need fertilizer for their crops," Jully said....
