Barmer, June 18 -- The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged suicide case of a 31-year-old woman who was reportedly raped in Barmer district, an official said. Police said that, the victim's father filed a report on June 11, stating that the accused had been harassing his daughter for a long time and was pressuring her for an illicit relationship. "He eventually raped her, following which she took the extreme step out of emotional trauma and fear, the complaint stated. On the basis of the complaint, the police registered a case and conducted a post-mortem through a medical board. The body was later handed over to the family for cremation. The accused was arrested in Jaisalmer district on June 13 and was sent to judicial custody. Condemning the incident, the NCW issued a statement on X: "The National Commission for Women has taken Suo Motu (on Monday) cognisance of a deeply disturbing case from Barmer, Rajasthan, where a 31-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after being blackmailed with rape threats and obscene videos."
