Audit flags signs of negligence at open cast mines
Barmer, Dec. 29 -- Audit observations placed before Parliament have exposed signs of negligence in environmental monitoring and administrative management at open cast mines.
Audit findings placed before Parliament show that while the ministry of coal has informed the Lok Sabha that environmental audits are regularly conducted and compliance reports are submitted by mine operators, ground-level implementation remains weak. The concern was raised by Barmer MP Ummedaram Beniwal during the recent Parliament session.
The observations repeatedly stress the need for regular monitoring of slope stability, land erosion, dust control, green belt development and maintenance of pollution control systems such as water sprinklers, air monitoring stations and drainage systems.
The audit also pointed out poor engagement with nearby villages, suggesting that the social and environmental impact of mining on local communities is not being adequately monitored. htc...
