asaram bapu surrenders in jodhpur jail
Jodhpur, Aug. 31 -- Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence for sexually exploiting a minor, surrendered at Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday, people aware of the matter said.
The 86-year-old convict was on interim bail granted on medical grounds, which had been extended several times since January this year. On August 27, a division bench of Justice Dinesh Mehta and Justice Vinit Kumar Mathur rejected his plea seeking further extension of interim bail after examining the findings of a medical board constituted by the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad.
The bench had earlier directed the hospital to constitute a board of specialists to evaluate Asaram's health condition. The board noted several medical issues but found him "clinically stable at present" and not in need of hospitalization or continuous medical attendance.
Asaram has been lodged in Jodhpur jail since 2013 after being convicted for sexually assaulting a minor girl. He was awarded a life sentence in 2018....
