Anganwadi worker dies by suicide, alleges harassment by officials
Udaipur, July 6 -- A 55-year-old Anganwadi worker died by suicide after consuming poison in Dhanmandi police station area of Udaipur. Before taking the extreme step, the woman recorded a video in which she accused her department officials of severe mental harassment, stating that she was being forced to end her life due to unbearable pressure.
The relatives of the deceased staged a protest and denied from conducting the postmortem of the dead body. The deceased was a resident near Shri Ji Public School, Ratakheta, and worked at the Bhilu Rana Anganwadi center on Sajjangarh Road. On Friday night, she called her son from near Delhi Gate Hanuman Mandir and informed him that she had consumed poison.
"The accused selected candidates based on religion and caste, and also took money for appointments. This deeply hurt my mother and pushed her to take this extreme step," said the younger daughter of the deceased.
"The accused is identified and lives in the Pratapnagar area of the city, but due to her political connections, she has not been arrested. Until action is taken and she is arrested, we will not allow the postmortem of my mother's body," she added.
The son of the deceased woman said" My mother had been harassed by department officials Atika Ahmed, Sharda Banshiwal, Jaya Veerwal, and Dinesh Meena".
He alleged that these individuals wanted to replace his mother with someone from their contacts and demanded Rs.1.5 lakh from her to let her continue working.
The harassment was both mental and financial, causing his mother immense distress, which she had shared with the family earlier.
Following the incident, a large crowd gathered at the Udaipur District Hospital in protest. Local MLA Tarachand Jain also visited the hospital. Deputy Sp Kailash Boriwal who is investing the matter said" A case has been registered against the accused and one of the accused hae been detained so far and the investigation is of the matter is still underway "....
