Jaipur, June 1 -- With elections to urban local bodies and panchayats due at the end of the year, the state government has set up an OBC political representation commission that will examine the sub categorisation of OBCs for reservation purposes in urban local bodies and panchayati raj institutions. "The OBC political representation commission has been set up following the justice G Rohini commission that was set up by the Centre to examine the issue of sub categorisation within the OBCs and recommend a mechanism for equitable distribution of the reservation," said Kuldeep Ranka, principal secretary social justice and empowerment department. "In 2024, the Supreme Court upheld the sub categorisation of OBCs and allowed states to set up commissions to sub-categorise Other Backward Classes (OBCs)," he said. "The commission will develop a mechanism on how the reservation will be given in urban local bodies and panchayat raj institutions among the various categories in the OBC," he said. As per the government order, the tenure of the commission is of three months but can be extended by the government. The social justice and empowerment department issued a notification on May 9 regarding the appointments to the commission. Retired judge Madanlal has been appointed as the chairman of the commission. Mohan Morwal, professor Rajiv Saxena, advocate Shrigopal Krishna and Pawan Mandaviya have been made members of the commission. Saxena is a former Rajasthan University professor and Morwal is chairman of the Kesh Kala board of the state government. Currently, the state government provides 21% reservation to OBCs in panchayats and urban local bodies. The reservation for SC/ST is as per their population in the respective panchayat or local body. Women have been given 50% reservation in ULBs and PRIs while Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) are entitled to 5% reservation and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) are entitled to 10% reservation. "The Jats are unhappy with the BJP and the party is looking to get support of original OBCs like Yadav, Charan, Rebari, Prajapt, Mali, Nai, Darzi. Teli etc. Jats have taken a major chunk of reservation and other castes are upset. The BJP is hoping to gain political advantage by sub categorisation," political analyst Mithilesh Jaimini said....
