Jaipur, Nov. 27 -- Activists from across Rajasthan converged in Jaipur on Wednesday to hold a rally demanding an accountability law, as part of a series of statewide rallies. Speaking at the culmination on Constitution Day, Magsaysay Award-winning and renowned social activist Aruna Roy said: "We have come to Jaipur on Constitution Day because our Constitution is the foundation of democracy. Dignity and rights in a democracy can be protected only when there is accountability. Without accountability, democracy remains incomplete. The state must bring an accountability law at the earliest so that the most marginalised can secure their rights." Hundreds of people from across the state gathered with the activists at Shahid Smarak on Wednesday. Among them were Naveena Kumari from Sirohi, who has been waiting for over a year to get a job under the MNREGA scheme. "But, every time I visit the panchayat they insult me and drive me out. For the last two years, they have only been telling me that there is no work available despite it is their responsibility to provide a job to every applicant under the scheme," she said. Udaipur-based Rajendra Kumar's payment, meanwhile, has also been stalled for more than three months. "This payment is my right which was provided by the government itself. But now they are denying it. Had there been an accountability law, I could have taken them to the court and ask for an answer," he added. Long-time campaigner for the accountability law, Nikhil Dey, said: "For more than two years, the rules for the Gig Workers' Welfare Act, Minimum Income for Guarantee Act, and Right to Health Act have not been notified. This reflects a severe collapse of political accountability. In every office, only a handful of people work while many don't-and officers and elected representatives themselves are unable to ensure that work gets done."
