ACB recovers Rs.20 lakh bribe day after arrest of BAP MLA
Jaipur, May 6 -- The Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday recovered the Rs.20-lakh cash, which Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) legislator Jaikrishn Patel allegedly accepted as a bribe from a mine owner to drop three questions related to illegal mining in the state assembly, police officers aware of the matter said, adding that three more people have been arrested in this connection.
On Sunday, the ACB laid a trap and caught Patel red-handed. However, his staff fled with the money, they added.
ACB DIG Rahul Kotoki said, "The employee, Rohit, who fled with the money is still absconding. However, he handed over the cash to his uncle, Jaswant aka Laxman, who passed it on to another person, Jagaram. On Monday, the ACB officials recovered the money from Jagaram."
The officer said that both Jaswant and Jagaram were arrested on Monday, and the MLA's cousin, who was also a middleman, Vijay Patel, was arrested on Sunday night.
On Sunday, the BAP MLA was caught from his official residence in Jaipur's Jyoti Nagar for allegedly accepting Rs.20 lakh bribe from a mine owner, Ravindra Singh Meena, who is also the son of a BJP leader Ramniwas Meena, for dropping the three assembly questions related to illegal mining.
"However, soon after accepting the bribe, Patel handed the bag of cash to his cousin, Vijay, who gave it to Rohit. However, Rohit too escaped," said Kotoki.
He added that a GPS tracker was installed in the bag by the ACB when they laid the trap to catch the MLA. "But Rohit removed the GPS and handed the bag over to Jaswant and fled towards Dausa, where he dropped the GPS tracker on the road. Meanwhile, Jaswant gave the money to Jagaram, who buried the bag in the garden of his residence in Indiranagar area," said the DIG.
After receiving tip-off on Jaswant, ACB arrested Jaswant on Monday. "During interrogation, he provided information on the transaction trail and Jagaram. Later, we arrested Jagaram from his house and recovered the money. A search is underway to track down Rohit," Kotoki said.
He also said that the agency used only freshly printed notes in this mission instead of dummy notes, which are usually used in such operations.
Meanwhile, the MLA and his cousin, Vijay, were presented in the ACB court on Monday by the agency demanding a seven-day remand. "The court has granted only two-day remand for both the accused," said Kotoki.
Officials said Patel demanded Rs.10 crore from the complainant to drop three questions regarding mining in Todabhim constituency in Karauli district, which were listed in the last assembly session.
"The questions were regarding some mining leases. After submitting the questions, Patel approached Singh and asked him to pay Rs.10-crore bribe to drop them. Later, the bribe was finalised for Rs.2 crore after a negotiation, and this was decided to be paid in some instalments. Singh had earlier paid Rs.1 lakh by visiting him in Banswara," said director general of ACB Ravi Prakash Meharda.
It was the second instalment that the complainant went to pay on Sunday when the agency arrested Patel. "We planned a mission to trap him on Sunday. Prior permission was taken from both speaker Vasudev Devnani and chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to conduct this mission and arrest the MLA," he said.
Patel contested from Banswara's Bagidora constituency in a bypoll in November as a BAP candidate after former Congress minister Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya switched to the BJP and stepped down from the MLA's post ahead of the general election in 2024. The Congress extended support to Patel and he defeated BJP candidate Subhash Tamboliya. Patel had finished second position in the 2023 assembly election from the same seat when Malviya bagged it.
The BAP on Sunday termed Patel's arrest a "conspiracy." Meanwhile, on Monday, Patel told the reporters on the court premises, "I am a victim of a larger political conspiracy."...
