Jaipur, Dec. 27 -- More than 70 people have been detained in connection with stone-pelting that erupted during the removal of an illegal railing outside a mosque in Jaipur district's Chomu town, police said, adding that six police personnel were injured in the incident which stemmed from a decades-old encroachment dispute. According to police, the dispute relates to an encroachment that has existed for a long time outside the Kalanderi mosque near the Chomu bus stand. Local residents and traders had repeatedly complained to the police that the encroachment caused frequent traffic congestion at the busy intersection. Police said discussions with the concerned group had been ongoing for the past three to four months. After several hours of talks on Thursday, the parties agreed to remove the encroachment. In the presence of police, stones spread across the main road were being removed for nearly two hours and stacked near the mosque wall. By evening on Thursday, the road was made encroachment-free. However, police alleged that soon after the police force left the spot, some people began erecting a permanent iron railing using girders outside the mosque, effectively starting fresh construction. About 25 feet of railing had already been installed when the matter was brought to the notice of the police by local residents and activists. Police teams reached the site and asked for the removal of the railing. The group objected and started opposing the police. From around 8pm till nearly 2am, police tried to negotiate with them, but no consensus was reached on scaling down or removing the railing. When the administration insisted on complete removal of the encroachment, the group refused to comply. Around 3am, in the presence of senior police officers, a JCB machine was called to remove the iron railing. As soon as the removal work began, miscreants allegedly started pelting stones at authorities, police said, adding that lathi charge and tear gas shells were used to disperse the crowd. The situation escalated as heavy stone pelting continued, leaving six policemen seriously injured. Seeing the situation worsen, additional forces were summoned from the control room. Around 4.30am, additional police commissioner Dr Rajiv Pachar reached the spot, followed by special police commissioner Rahul Prakash. Circle officer Usha Yadav said, "An FIR is being registered in the case and over 70 people allegedly involved have been detained for questioning. As a precautionary measure, internet services have been suspended in the Chomu area." The situation is currently peaceful, police said. Director general of police (Law and Order) Sanjay Agarwal said, "The situation is completely under control. Close to six policemen have sustained injuries in the stone-pelting. Strict action will be taken against those who took the law into their own hands."...
