6 fall ill after C-section deliveries at Kota hospital, 1 dies; probe on
Jaipur, May 7 -- Six women fell ill following caesarean deliveries at Kota Medical College Hospital, with one of them dying on Wednesday, officials said, as the deceased's families accused the hospital staff of negligence.
Principal of Kota Medical College, Dr Prasun Jain, said: "All of them were admitted to the hospital's maternity ward on Monday, when their surgeries took place and they delivered their babies. However, on Tuesday, their conditions deteriorated drastically and they had to be shifted to the super speciality block (SSB). On Wednesday morning, one of them passed away."
Officials said all six developed a kidney infection post-surgery. "Prima facie, their blood pressure dropped while several of them also had breathing issues. Initial tests suggested some infection in their kidneys. But it is yet not clear how it happened to all of them," Jain said.
The deceased's was identified as Payal (32).
The five women still in the SSB are Ragini Meena (29), Sushila Prakash (35), Chandra Kala Kakaria (30), Dhanni Lal (30), and Jyoti Ravi (20).
According to a press release from the hospital, Kota Medical College has formed a five-member committee to probe the matter and monitor the other victims who are being treated at the SSB. Meanwhile, the state health department also formed another four-member committee from the Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital. This members will reach the hospital on Thursday to launch a probe
Meena's brother, Vikas, said: "We had admitted my sister to the hospital on May 4. On the same day, a caesarean surgery was performed on her and she delivered the baby. However, she started falling sick at least eight hours later when her blood pressure dropped."
Vikas added that the doctors were informed immediately. "All six women fell sick at the same time. All of their symptoms were also similar. It is clearly due to some negligence by the doctors or the nurses. My sister was absolutely fine and healthy before the surgery. Doctors also reported the same. How could she fall sick so she had to be transferred to the SSB?"
Dhanni's husband, Kushal, said his wife was still bleeding after surgery. "We told the doctor but no action was taken immediately. There is no sign of her improvement. Doctors are only telling us that some problem occurred in her kidney. How is that even possible? All of them are suffering from the same issue. It can't be a coincidence. If anything happens to my wife, I will not leave anyone."
Chandra Kala's husband, Rakesh, demanded action over the negligence that caused complications. "She was fine even after the surgery. But suddenly her urine stopped. Then she was shifted to the SSB. We are shocked."
Kota (South) MLA Sandeep Sharma visited the hospital on Wednesday afternoon. "All the women are being treated at the SSB block. Some infection was found in their kidneys. I have directed the doctors to take necessary action and provide them the best treatment."
He said a high-level committee had been set up to probe the matter....
