Jaipur, Nov. 30 -- Ajmer municipal corporation on Saturday removed over 50 shops from the vicinity of Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra and Dargah area for allegedly encroaching upon public roads, officials said. An official from the municipality who was overseeing the drive, said, "The drive was operated under the supervision of our sector officers. At least 50 shops that had encroached within the 2 kilometres area of Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra and Ajmer Dargah have been removed today from the area. They had also been issued a notice a month ago." He added: "We had also deployed a heavy police force and forest officials from Dargah police station and also a company of RAC battalion. The eviction happened peacefully. Rest of the encroachments will also be removed soon."The drive, which started at around 8 am in the morning, employed the services of 3 JCBs and 6 tractors, said the officer. However, several local shopkeepers staged a dharna claiming that the drive targeted only a specific community in the area. Speaking to the media, a local shopkeeper, Haneef Muhammed, said, "Such a drive has taken place earlier as well. However, the municipality said that any strip over the drains will not be considered as an encroachment. However, the municipality has removed several such strips from our shops during today's drive. They did not clarify the reasons behind the change in this decision but only took action against the shops of the Muslim community."...
