Jaipur, Dec. 23 -- With the family's consent, both kidneys of a five-year-old boy, who was declared brain-dead at AIIMS Jodhpur, were transplanted into a patient at the same hospital, while his liver was flown to Delhi for another transplant. According to AIIMS authorities, the child, Bhomaram (5), a resident of Naiyon Ki Dhani in the Gida area of Balotra district, was admitted to AIIMS Jodhpur on December 15 after suffering recurrent seizures. He was treated in the paediatric emergency department, where several investigations, including a CT scan and other tests, were conducted. Medical examinations revealed that the child was suffering from cerebral oedema. Further evaluation confirmed status epilepticus and central diabetes insipidus. Due to repeated seizures affecting the brain, Bhomaram was declared brain-dead at 11.43 pm on 20 December. Following the declaration, doctors counselled the family on the possibility of organ donation. With their consent, the procedure was carried out on the morning of 22 December, after which the body was handed over to relatives. The liver was transported by flight to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Delhi, while both kidneys were transplanted into a patient at AIIMS Jodhpur. This marks the 10th cadaveric organ donation at AIIMS Jodhpur and the second paediatric cadaveric donation. Under the programme, the institute has so far successfully conducted 16 kidney and liver transplants. The child's grandfather, Kishnaram Sen, said the doctors informed the family about the brain death and counselled them about organ donation. "After discussing with the entire family, we agreed on Sunday. On Monday, after the organ donation, the doctors handed over the child's body to us," he said. The child's father, Bhairaram, said that although his son was no longer alive, his organs had given life to others. "Through this, two lives have been illuminated," he said. AIIMS Jodhpur Superintendent Dr Abhishek Bhardwaj expressed gratitude to the family for their noble decision, noting that the consent had helped save two lives. Transplant nodal officer Shivcharan said organs must be transplanted within five to six hours after retrieval, which is why the liver was sent to Delhi by flight....
