Jaipur, Dec. 18 -- A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arrested five accused in connection with alleged irregularities in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) works in the state. The arrests were made following technical surveillance and analysis of evidence gathered during the investigation. Those arrested include Mahesh Kumar Mittal, Hemant Mittal alias Golu, Umesh Kumar Sharma, Gopal Kumawat, then accounts officer in the public health engineering department (PHED) and Piyush Jain, according to an official release by ACB. The arrests pertain to alleged collusion between private firms and PHED officials in securing tenders and executing works under the JJM. According to the ACB, some tenders were allegedly obtained by firms through collusion with PHED officials, including executive engineer Maya Lal Saini (PHED, Behror division), assistant engineer Rakesh Chauhan and junior engineer Pradeep Kumar, both posted in Neemrana sub-division. After securing the tenders, the accused executed substandard and irregular work, manipulated measurement books, and fraudulently withdrew crores of rupees from the state exchequer. DGP Govind Gupta said an SIT has been formed to ensure swift investigation and filing of charge sheets in the cases. Gupta said that earlier, six people were arrested in connection with the JJM case following surprise inspections, and charge sheets were filed against them after investigation.
