5 from MP killed as car catches fire on e-way
Bharatpur/ Alwar, May 1 -- Five members of a family from Madhya Pradesh were burnt alive after their car caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan's Alwar district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
Inspector of the Laxmangarh police station, Neki Ram, said, "The deceased were natives of Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh who were returning home after visiting Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir. Police immediately reached the spot upon receiving the information but all the passengers were burnt alive inside the car. Only the driver could save himself by jumping off the running car."
Police suspect that the fire was sparked due to a short-circuit that also engulfed the entire car within seconds as it came in contact with the CNG.
"The patrolling team of National Highway Authority of India also reached the spot and called the fire brigade vehicle to extinguish the fire in an hour. The bodies were burnt so badly that only some flesh and bones could be recovered by the officials which were stored in a plastic bag and sent for DNA sampling for identification," said the officer.
The deceased were identified as Santosh Kumar (35), his wife Shashi (33), mother-in-law Parvati Devi (50), and his two daughters Ragni (13), and Shakshi (9), while the driver, Vinod Kumar Mehar, died during treatment, police said.
"The car driver jumped from the burning car. He was found in a critical condition from few metres away from the car. He was rushed to the district hospital where doctors had referred him to Jaipur for advanced treatment. He died during treatment," police said.
According to the police, the family hired the car from Sheopur to visit Vaishno Devi temple.
"The car runs on petrol and Compressed Natural Gas system was also fitted in it. These two fuel intensified the fire. The passengers got stuck even before turning to the gates," he said.
Meanwhile, superintendent of police Sudhir Chaudhary has formed a special team and ordered a thorough probe into the matter.
"This incident needs a detailed technical investigation. Such an accident took place for the first time at that specific patch of the highway which was recently developed. We are probing whether the CNG kit was installed externally or it was fit there by the company itself. We will also check if the car had proper fitness certificate. Necessary action will be taken accordingly."...
