5,540 booked for drunk driving till Nov 11: Cops
Jaipur, Nov. 14 -- Under the ongoing 15-day statewide road safety campaign, running from November 4 to 18, the state police and transport department have initiated action against over 5,540 people found driving under the influence of alcohol, an official joint press release said on Thursday.
In addition to the drive against drunk driving, the state transport department's drive against general traffic violations has resulted in challans being issued to 14,278 vehicles across the state till November 11- out of which 912 were for overloading of goods vehicles. 322 for passenger conveyance in goods vehicles, and an additional 9,469 for other violations, said the release.
The release added that 170 passenger vehicles were penalised for carrying passengers beyong capacity, 34 buses for operating with luggage stored on top of the vehicle, and cancelled 350 driving licenses and revoked 79 vehicle registration for a range of offences, including speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, and other violations.
Under the campaign, the health department has conducted eye examinations for 1,501 commercial vehicle (truck and bus) drivers plying on national and state highways on November 12 and distributed spectacles to 264 drivers with poor eyesight.
So far, the department has examined the eyes of 9,507 drivers and distributed spectacles to 1,527 drivers, said the release.
According to the release, the road safety campaign also involves initiatives by the public works department to remove roadside bushes, repair speed breakers, install warning signs, indicators and signage, and close unauthorised cuts.
The urban development department and local bodies department have also been engaged in carrying out anti-encroachment drives along state highways and repairing road lights and relocating stray animals, the release said.
The initiative was initiated in the wake of a string of deadly road accidents in the state, which killed 82 people in the 80 days leading up to November 3, as earlier reported by HT.
The Supreme Court recently initiated a suo-moto hearing on the matter, in which it ordered a sweeping safety audit of national and state highways by the state government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
