4 killed as fire breaks out at hotel in Ajmer
Jaipur, May 2 -- Four people were killed and five others were injured after a fire broke out at a five-storey hotel in Rajasthan's Ajmer on Thursday, officials said.
Ajmer collector Lok Bondhu said, "A massive broke out due to a suspected short circuit in the first floor of the hotel in Diggi Bazaar area around 8am. Four people, including two men, a woman and a child died due to suffocation after the flames engulfed the entire building. Five fire tenders and police personnel rushed to the spot and the flame was brought under control around 10am. The narrow lanes leading up to the hotel hampered the rescue work."
Many boarders jumped off the building to save their lives while many got stuck in fire. The injured ones were rushed to the JLN Govt Medical College Hospital Ajmer, fire brigade officials said, adding there were 30 boarders at the time of the incident.
"Nine of the 15 people rescued were brought to the hospital. Four were brought dead while another five are in serious condition. One of them sustained 100% burn injuries while rest had 50 to 60% injuries. One of the deceased is a 1.5-year-old boy," Dr Anil Samaria, principal of LN Govt Medical College Hospital said.
The deceased were identified as Alfej Noorani, his wife Shabnam Noorani, and their son Arman Noorani, all residents of Gujarat. Another Delhi-based boarder Mohammed Zaheer were also among the deceased, police said.
"The hotel probably did not have any fire NOC. We are probing the matter and checking whether the other fire safety measures were in place. A case has been registered against the hotel authority under sections 125 (a), 125 (b), 106 (1) of the BNS," Ajmer superintendent of police (SP) Himanshu Jangid said.
An eyewitness, recounting the incident, said there was a sound of a blast after which he, along with his wife, ran out.
"I heard the sound of the explosion of an air conditioner. My wife and I rushed out of the hotel. The fire brigade arrived after about half an hour. We broke the window pane from outside to raise an alarm. A woman threw her child down into my arms from a window. She also tried to jump off the building but we stopped her," Mangila Kalosia, another boarder said.
Expressing condolence over the incident, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said, "The loss of lives in the fire incident at a private hotel in Ajmer is extremely tragic. In express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The district administration has been directed to provide all possible medical assistance to the injured. I pray for peace to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to those who are injured."
Reacting to the incident, Congress leader, Sachin Pilot said, "My condolences to the families of the victims. I urge the government to conduct a fair investigation into the matter."...
