Udaipur, June 25 -- The administration of the Ravindranath Tagore (RNT) Medical College in Udaipur has removed three staff members, including the chief warden, from their posts in connection with the death of a doctor, even as the resident doctors continued their strike for the sixth day on Tuesday alleging that no suspension or strict disciplinary action has yet been taken against those responsible, people aware of the development said. The order was issued late on Monday night by college principal Dr Vipin Mathur. It stated that chief warden Narendra Bansal, senior assistant Hiralal Paliwal, and staff member Virendra have been relieved from their duties and directed to report to the administrative office, they added. "As part of these orders, Dr Narendra Bansal, professor, department of dentistry, has been relieved from the position of chief warden of the hostel with immediate effect. Additionally, two senior assistants, Mr Heeralal Paliwal and Mr Virendra, have also been removed from the chief warden's office and directed to report to the administrative block," the order said. "Furthermore, a three-member committee, comprising Dr Sudha Gandhi (chairperson), Dr Mukesh Sharma and Dr Sunil Gokhru, has been constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter and submit a report by June 22, 2025," it added. The development took place after Dr Ravi Sharma (35), a resident of Makrana in Nagaur district, died after allegedly suffering an electric shock from a water cooler at the hostel. He was posted at the Kherwara community health centre and arrived in Udaipur recently, ahead of his scheduled joining at the Maharana Bhupal Singh Hospital, officials said. The doctors' strike has caused severe disruption in medical services, with ICUs, operation theatres, labour rooms, and wards functioning with minimal staff, often just one senior doctor. The out-patient departments (OPDs), which typically used to have four resident doctors attending to patients, are now manned by just one, resulting in long queues and the wait time has gone up by two to three hours for patients, they added. "Six days have passed since the death took place. However, the administration has not yet accepted any accountability. In protest, the resident doctors have planned a hunger strike on Tuesday. A condolence meeting in memory of Dr Sharma will be held on the college campus, followed by a street play to narrate the sequence of events leading to his death," said joint secretary of the resident doctors' union Dr Ashish Mahant. Taking cognizance of the incident, the State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the RNT Medical college principal, the principal of SMS Medical College in Jaipur, collector Namit Mehta, SP Yogesh Goyal, and the registrar of Rajasthan Medical Council. They have been asked to submit a factual report regarding the incident, officials said. Reacting to the three officials' removal, president of the Resident Doctor's Association, Udaipur, said that the protesters are not happy with the decision. "The removal of these three officials is a mere formality and is not in the list of our demands. We want the culprits to be held responsible and a strict action must be taken against them. We are not satisfied with the action taken and will continue the protest."
