3 die, 11 injured as vehicle falls into gorge
Udaipur, Jan. 22 -- Three people were killed and 17 were injured on Wednesday after a four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying 27 passengers lost control and fell into a deep gorge in Udaipur's Dingawari area, police said.
Kotra Police Station in-charge Mangla Ram said, "Around 12:30 pm, the jeep was on its way from Bilwan to Kotra when its brakes suddenly failed while climbing a slope. The driver tried his best to control the vehicle, but it veered off the road and plunged nearly 60 feet into a gorge".
Local villagers immediately rushed to the spot and started rescue operations. On receiving information, Kotra police and 108 ambulance services reached the site. At least 20 injured people were taken to Kotra Hospital, while seven seriously injured passengers were referred to Udaipur for advanced treatment.
Ram said that most of the passengers were residents of Malder village in the Manda police station area. Preliminary investigation revealed that the jeep was overloaded, carrying more passengers than its permitted capacity. Police have started further investigation into the incident....
