27 held for attacking cops during clashes
Bharatpur, Oct. 23 -- Twenty-seven people were arrested on Wednesday for attacking police and damaging police vehicles during Diwali celebrations in Bharatpur, police said.
Police said the incident occurred under Bayana police station jurisdiction, where around 200 people blocked the Bharatpur-Karauli state highway in Bayana town on Monday. Protesters pelted stones at police, damaging two vehicles, and several officers were injured.
The clash initially erupted between two groups in Seupura village under Gadhi Bajna police station over a land dispute. One group called relatives and villagers to block the highway, causing vehicles to be stuck for nearly two kilometers.
When police arrived to disperse the crowd, the protesters refused to cooperate and attacked the officers. Authorities later identified the protesters and arrested 27 accused, while two minors were detained. Two women had been arrested earlier in connection with the incident.
Digant Anand, Bharatpur superintendent of police, said, "After the land dispute in the village, around 200 people gathered at Bhim Nagar Tiraha in Bayana town. They blocked the state highway and attacked police personnel, damaging vehicles when officials tried to reason with them."
The accused have been booked under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and sections 285, 121, and 132 of the BNS, Anand added....
