2 Guj women killed after SUV hits them, search on for driver
Barmer, Dec. 26 -- Two women pilgrims from Gujarat were killed after a speeding Thar SUV hit them on National Highway-68 in Rajasthan's Barmer district early on Thursday, police said.
According to police, the accident occurred around 5am near the Bor Charanan toll plaza, about two kilometres ahead of it, under the Dhorimana police station area limits. The impact was so severe that the victims were flung nearly 50 metres away on opposite sides of the road, police said, adding the driver of the SUV fled the spot with the vehicle after the incident.
Police reached the spot and shifted the bodies to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. According to police, a group of around 50 devotees from Gujarat was returning by bus after offering prayers at Ramdevra. During the return journey, the bus was halted on the highway. Meanwhile, two women from the group - Premi Ben (55) and her sister-in-law Tara Ben (50) - got down from the bus and attempted to cross the highway.
At that moment, a Thar SUV travelling at a high speed from Dhorimana towards Sanchore hit both women. Both suffered severe head injuries, multiple fractures to their arms and legs, and excessive bleeding, leading to their death on the spot.
Police said they have registered a case and are scanning CCTV footage to identify the SUV and trace the absconding driver....
