Kota is the centre of India's test-prep business, estimated to be worth Rs.10,000 crore annually, according to officials in the district administration. Students from around the country arrive here in huge numbers after completing Class X, and register in residential test-prep institutes. They also enrol in schools, most of which are largely for purposes of certification.
Students attend classes only in the test-prep institutes, which prepare them for their Class XII examination, but more importantly, entrance examinations such as NEET and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Some students find the grind stressful, especially because they are away from their families.
Amid a surge in suicide cases in Kota, where students from all over the country arrive in huge numbers after completing Class X to prepare for various competitive exams, the Kota district administration in August 2023 issued several guidelines for hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations, including installation of spring-loaded fans in rooms "to provide students mental support and security".
The incident comes on the heels of the state government introducing a legislation to regulate coaching centres amid growing concerns over a surge in student suicides, particularly in Kota.
Last month, the bill titled Rajasthan Coaching Centres (Control and Regulation) Bill, 2025 was tabled in the state assembly. The state assembly later sent the bill to a select committee for further consideration.
Meanwhile, the NEET-UG examination was successfully conducted today across Rajasthan. In Jaipur, around 90 examination centres were set up, where around 36,024 candidates appeared for the exam. The examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), was held from 2 pm to 5 pm, with entry to centres beginning at 11 am. Nationwide, over 2.3 million students registered for NEET-UG 2025, including approximately 200,000 students from Rajasthan....
