15-day road safety campaign begins
Jaipur, Nov. 6 -- Acting on the directions of chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Rajasthan has launched a 15-day Statewide Road Safety Campaign from November 4 to 18 to curb road accidents and strengthen traffic management and emergency response systems across the state, an official release states.
The chief minister's office is closely monitoring the campaign through consolidated reports received from the home department, it said.
The police department has been designated as the nodal agency and field coordinator, responsible for on-ground supervision and coordination. Intensive enforcement drives are underway to penalize violations such as drunk driving, over-speeding, wrong-side movement, and reckless driving. Vehicles without number plates or reflectors are being seized, and strict action is being taken on highways and major roads. The government also plans to implement a lane-driving system on all six-lane national highways, following the NH-48 model.
The Transport and Road Safety Department has begun suspending and cancelling the licenses of drivers found guilty of over-speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol. The department is also conducting vehicle inspections, road safety workshops, and awareness campaigns, including mandatory installation of reflector tapes.
The Public Works Department and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have started closing unauthorized cuts on national and state highways within 15 days. Simultaneously, white-lining of roads, installation of railings and safety nets on medians, clearing of roadside vegetation, and repair of potholes and shoulders are being carried out.
The Medical and Health Department will conduct eye check-up drives for all drivers above 45 years of age. Meanwhile, the Urban Development and Local Bodies Department is clearing encroachments from footpaths, repairing traffic signals and streetlights.
The Labour Department will take punitive action against transport firms that make drivers work for excessively long hours. Drives are being held to ensure compliance on driver working hours and rest periods....
