Jaipur, Nov. 4 -- At least 13 people were killed and 10 others were injured after a speeding dumper truck, allegedly driven by a man under the influence of alcohol, rammed into over a dozen vehicles in Rajasthan's Jaipur on Monday, police said, adding that the accused has been detained in connection with the incident.
The incident took place near Loha Mandi in Harmada area of Jaipur at around 1pm. "Prima facie, the dumper driver was under the influence of alcohol. We have detained him while his vehicle was also seized. Bodies have been sent for an autopsy while the injured ones are undergoing treatment," Jaipur (West) deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Hanuman Prasad Meena said.
Officials said that the dumper truck first hit a two-wheeler near a petrol pump, following which locals began chasing the vehicle. "The dumper driver, Kalyan Meena, then increased the speed to take the road number 14 towards a national highway. During this, the truck's brakes failed due to over speeding and began crashing into other vehicles for nearly 300 metres," Harmara police station house officer (SHO) Uday Singh said.
Purported CCTV footage of the incident purportedly showed the dumper truck ploughing through a slew of vehicles parked on the side of the road. In total, the truck hit 17 vehicles before coming to a halt, police said.
Of the 13 deceased, some were passengers in the vehicles hit by the dumper truck, while the remaining were pedestrians. "Many of the victims lost their hands and legs. Parts of bodies were scattered here and there. The locals and the police teams rushed the injured to a nearby hospital from where many were referred to the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur," Singh said.
Officials confirmed that eight people were undergoing treatment at SMS Hospital's trauma centre, while two others were admitted at Kanwatia Hospital.
The SHO said that the dumper truck driver also sustained injuries in the incident and is being treated at SMS Hospital.
"A case of negligent driving will be lodged against him. At the time of the accident, he was driving at 100kmph on a narrow and crowded road in Loha Mandi. He was also driving on the wrong side to flee from the chasing locals, he said, adding that police have detained the accused and seized his vehicle.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives as he announced ex gratia of Rs.2 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs.50,000 to the injured. "Pained by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Jaipur, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover soon," he said in a post on X.

"Bhanu and his sister Varsha (19) came to their uncle Mahendra's place to celebrate Diwali. After the vacation, they were supposed to return home to Sikar on Monday. I came to drop them at a bus stand when the dumper suddenly approached. Mahendra and Bhanu have been crushed in a blink of eye while Varsha was also badly hit and fell on the roadside. While the others died on the spot, Varsha is admitted to SMS Hospital."
