13 booked for extorting, confining family over 'inter-caste' marriage
Barmer, July 22 -- A first information report (FIR) was registered against 13 people on charges of extorting and confining a family in Jodhpur district after the latter allegedly refused to pay a fine of Rs.1 lakh to community leaders after a member of the family married a woman from Madhya Pradesh, police said on Monday.
Sub inspector (SI) Govind Ram said that the incident dates to December 3, 2022, when 35-year-old Rajaram Paliwal, who is physically challenged, married a woman from Madhya Pradesh. On Sunday, Paliwal filed a complaint against the leaders at Luni police station.
Quoting the complainant, the SI said, "The community leaders claimed that he had married outside their caste. When the family refused to pay, they were allegedly held hostage for an entire day and released only after making the payment. Since then, villagers have stopped speaking to them, and pressure is being mounted with a demand of Rs.21 lakh."
The officer said that Paliwal had informed the community leaders that his wife belongs to the same caste and had even submitted a proof of her caste but they refused to accept it. "On June 26, 2024, a panchayat was held in Bathinda, where the family was declared socially boycotted," the SI added.
"13 people have been named in the FIR, while the total number of accused could be around 100. The case has been lodged under Sections 308(2) (extortion), 308(7), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)," he said....
