Bharatpur, July 9 -- Around 12 people were injured after a clash with river sand lease holders in Nagaur district on Monday night, police on Tuesday said, adding that complaints from both sides have been registered. Nagaur superintendent of police Narayan Singh Togas said that the incident took place in Riyan Badi town when lease holders were transporting river sand by their vehicles but villagers stopped them and started a protest. "The clash erupted between two groups when villagers stopped the vehicles that were transporting sand. On being informed, police personnel reached there and controlled the situation to maintain law and order. Around five people sustained injuries," he said. "The villagers claimed that the mining mafia were transporting river sand illegally. In response, the lease holders started an open fire and mowed down some villagers. All injured were rushed to the local hospital. Complaints have been registered from both sides and an investigation into the matter has been initiated," he said, adding that tehsildar on Tuesday issued notice to ban river sand mining till July 21. Meanwhile, Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal said that villagers were agitating against the illegal mining but it continued on permission of Nagaur district administration. "Locals have been staging demonstrations demanding cancellation of mining leases. More than a dozen people were injured due to the violence carried out by the mining mafia on Monday night under the protection of the police in Riyan Badi," he said....
