11 dead in accidents across Raj amid dense fog and cold wave
Jaipur, Jan. 17 -- At least 11 people were killed in separate road accidents reported from Chittorgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk and Bikaner districts in Rajasthan. Dense fog, reduced visibility and the movement of stray animals on highways are being cited as major causes behind the tragic incidents.
In Chittorgarh, an accident occurred on Thursday night on the Chittorgarh-Udaipur six-lane highway near Bhadsoda. A car returning from Udaipur to Chittorgarh suddenly encountered a cow on the road. In an attempt to save the animal, the driver lost control, the car hit the divider, overturned and then collided with a truck coming from the opposite lane. All four men travelling in the car died on the spot. The deceased were residents of the Pratapnagar area of Chittorgarh.
Another major accident was reported from Sawai Madhopur district, where two trucks collided head-on near Kustla Circle on the Kota-Lalsot Mega State Highway around 11 pm on Thursday. According to Ravanajna Dungar police station SHO Dilip Kumar, one truck was coming from the Sawai Madhopur side, while the other had entered the highway from the eight-lane expressway. One truck was loaded with vegetables and the other with plywood boards. The collision was so severe that both vehicles were mangled.
Four people were rescued and rushed to hospital, but three, including Sunil Kumar Pandey and Bhawani, residents of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh, died during treatment. One critically injured person was referred to Jaipur. The accident led to a long traffic jam, which was later cleared by police.
In Tonk district, two men died after their car plunged into a dadiya ki nadi (water-filled pit) near Kathmana village. Jhirana police station in-charge Rajendra Prasad said the deceased were Hansraj (40), son of Gopal Gurjar, and his friend Hansraj (42), son of Bhairulal Gurjar, both salesmen at a liquor shop and residents of Soda village in the Diggi area. On Thursday night, they were transporting cartons of country liquor when the car went out of control at a turn near the pond and fell into the water. With the doors locked, both were trapped inside and drowned.
The Bikaner division also witnessed two fatal accidents on Friday.
In Lunkaransar, a head-on collision between a pickup vehicle and a motorcycle killed motorcyclist Chunnilal of Madiya village on the spot.
Constable Ramkumar said the impact was so strong that the motorcycle was completely shattered.
In another incident on the Udayramsar bypass, an unidentified vehicle hit a couple, killing the woman instantly and injuring her husband.
Police have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution amid dense fog and poor visibility, warning that speeding and stray animals continue to pose serious risks during the ongoing cold wave....
