1 more succumbed to injuries as Jaisalmer bus blaze toll at 22
Jodhpur, Oct. 17 -- The death toll in the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway bus fire tragedy rose to 22 on Thursday, officials said.
Dr Fateh Singh Bhati, Superintendent of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, said Bhagu Bano (54), a resident of Bamboron Ki Dhani, passed away on Thursday. She had suffered about 80% burns and was on a ventilator.
DNA reports have confirmed the identities of 18 victims, while two injured passengers who later died during treatment and one who succumbed on the way to Jodhpur in an ambulance had already been identified earlier. One body still remains unidentified. Of the 13 injured in the incident, the condition of three continues to be critical.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (Headquarters) Nazim Ali said that after the DNA testing and post-mortem, the process of handing over the bodies to their families has begun. He said that sensitivity and respect are being ensured at every level. He added that arrangements are being made to ensure that each body is transported to its native village or residence. The district administration is sending a government employee and a police constable with each ambulance to avoid any inconvenience.
Administrative and police teams from both Jodhpur and Jaisalmer districts are in constant coordination to ensure timely assistance to the affected families.
After DNA testing, the bodies of nine victims were kept at AIIMS Jodhpur and nine at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital Jodhpur, all of whom have now been identified.
Ali said that one body has not yet been claimed. The unclaimed body has been kept at AIIMS. The district administration has appealed to all citizens to immediately contact the helpline numbers if they have any information regarding any missing person in the Jaisalmer bus tragedy....
