1 killed, 20 injured as truck, school bus collide
Barmer, April 23 -- A 14-year-old student died and more than 20 others were injured on Wednesday morning when a truck ploughed into their school bus on a highway in Barmer district, police said.
According to the police, the collision occurred around 8am on National Highway 25 in the Baytu police station area of Barmer district. "The truck rammed the bus of Saraswati Vidya Mandir School, which was carrying 36 students en route to pick up more children for school," said Baytu police station house officer Manohar Vishnoi.
The impact was severe: The truck dragged the bus nearly 50 feet as several students were pinned under seats, requiring a JCB machine for their rescue, police added.
More than 20 children suffered injuries. They were first rushed to Baytu Hospital, with nine serious cases referred to Balotra for advanced care.
One of them, 14-year-old Viradharam was airlifted to Jodhpur but died en route.
Police said eight children remain admitted to a private hospital in Balotra, undergoing treatment. Most have fractures in their hands and legs; several also suffered head injuries.
Vishnoi stated that the police are on the lookout for the absconding truck driver....
