'Vilayati Babool' to be eradicated soon
Jaipur, Oct. 17 -- The Rajasthan government has begun preparing a comprehensive action plan to completely eradicate Vilayati Babool (Prosopis juliflora) from the state.
A meeting of various departments was held at the Panchayati Raj auditorium in the secretariat under the chairmanship of Panchayati Raj minister Madan Dilawar. Minister of state for Panchayati Raj, Otaram Devasi, also attended the meeting.
Madan Dilawar called for coordinated efforts by all departments to ensure effective and permanent eradication of the invasive species. He directed the forest and revenue departments to issue clear and transparent guidelines to launch the eradication drive across all villages without delay.
He further instructed that an order be issued soon to remove the requirement of repeated permissions for cutting the plant, ensuring that no legal hurdles slow the process.
Dilawar described Vilayati Babool as an aggressive foreign species posing a severe threat to Rajasthan's rural land, pastures, and ecosystem. Its deep roots-reaching up to 30 feet-and high water absorption capacity-up to 15 metres-have caused a drop in groundwater levels and reduced soil fertility, leading to the destruction of native plant species.
