Jaipur, Nov. 18 -- The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Rajasthan government over its perceived inability to prevent the rising levels of pollution in the Jojari River, which flows through the Jodhpur, Pali and Balotra regions, lawyers familiar with court proceedings said. "The court expressed its grave concern over the industrial pollution in Jojari river. On Monday, the judges called it a 'pathetic failure' on the part of the state in controlling this pollution from industries going into the rivers and causing suffering for two million people," said additional advocate general of Rajasthan, Shiv Mangal Sharma. The apex court on Monday accepted the detailed status report and the statement filed by the government on this matter and reserved the order for November 21. The court also hinted that the order will have stricter directions beyond the previous NGT order. Pointing to the failure of industrial pollution control infrastructure, the court noted all the CETPs have been bypassed and effluents are being directly discharged into the river. They questioned how municipal authorities and RIICO could seek relief when the pollution was continuing unabated and the infrastructure meant to prevent it had been rendered ineffective or deliberately bypassed. Sharma, appearing for the State, assured the Court that Rajasthan has now taken a conscious decision to follow all positive operational directions issued by the NGT in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. "We urged the court to keep in abeyance the Rs.2,00,00,000 penalty imposed by NGT on RIICO and the municipal bodies, to stay the adverse remarks passed against these authorities, pending review of compliance and progress. The State is committed to extending full cooperation to the Court and implementing all required measures to resolve the decades-old crisis," Sharma stated....
