'Oppn has insulted all women': BJP protests LS expansion bill rejection
Jaipur, April 24 -- Women workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest on Monday in Jaipur against opposition parties' rejection of the constitutional amendment bill for a delimitation exercise aimed at fast-tracking 33% women's reservation.
On Monday morning, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and deputy chief minister Diya Kumari flagged off the rally-Jan Akrosh Mahila Padayatra-from the BJP state headquarters by waving the national flag.
Addressing the rally, the chief minister said: "The opposition parties marked April 17 as a black day in the history of Parliament by rejecting the crucial constitutional amendment bill to expand the size of Lok Sabha which could also have fast tracked the 33% reservation for the women in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought this bill to pave way for increasing women's representation. The Congress has never thought about it. Prioritising women is also a crucial part of our culture. But opposition parties, with their negative mindset, refused to support this bill and proved April 17 as a black day in the history."
He further accused the opposition of preferring their own political interests over the country's welfare.
Deputy chief minister Kumari said: "This is an insult to all the women in India whom our PM promised to give more representation in Lok Sabha. It is shameful how the Congress and their aides took away their rights."
Hundreds of women sloganeered against the Congress during the rally, chanting "Mahilaon ka apmaan, Congress hai beimann".
The rally was scheduled to end at Shahid Smarak, but police formed a barricade near the police commissionerate to maintain law and order and manage traffic. When the rally reached the barricade, a minor clash broke out between woman leader Suman Sharma and police as she tried to break through.
Jaipur MP Manju Sharma said: "This bill was our right. By rejecting this bill, the Congress has exposed their own hypocritical character."
Ekta Agarwal, general secretary of the Rajasthan BJP unit, said: "All these women have gathered here today to show their strength to the Congress who snatched their rights. Women can be the avatar of Goddess Laxmi, but they can also take the avatar of Goddess Durga if required. Women will give them a suitable answer at the right time. We have gathered here to warn them to be prepared to face their terrible future after such a shameful action."...
