'Offer books, not garlands': Union min at literacy drive
Alwar, May 28 -- Union environment and forest minister and Alwar MP Bhupender Yadav started "Sansad Sampark Samvad Yatra" - an ongoing literacy drive - and encouraged villagers to offer books instead of garlands or turbans during welcome ceremonies which could be donated to local school libraries.
Explaining his new approach, Yadav said that flower garlands fade in hours, while books endure and empower future generations. "Instead of spending money on ceremonial garlands, that same amount could be used to purchase books for school libraries. That is a gift that grows," he said in a literacy drive across rural areas of Alwar on Sunday.
He also announced the establishment of 100 e-libraries in rural Alwar to support competitive exam aspirants, of which 66 are already operational. The concept has gained widespread appreciation as it gives students free access to digital learning. The campaign was carried out in villages such as Lili, Kalsada, Malakheda, Garh Binjari, Patan, Chhilodi, Beleta, and Rajpur Chhota. In addition to listening to public grievances and sharing government schemes, Yadav distributed 11 saplings to each household and urged them to plant 111 more in return - reinforcing a message of environmental sustainability.
Former Rajasthan minister and senior Meo leader Nasru Khan told HT, "This step is inspiring. Youth from Meo-dominated villages are already running e-libraries and many of them have now secured jobs. I will help establish e-libraries in 10 major villages of Mewat next month with public support."
Political analyst Harishankar Goyal remarked, "Youth support often defines political capital. Yadav's strategy of combining sports and education is a long-term investment in voter trust. Replacing garlands with books is a symbolic yet powerful message that aligns politics with purpose."
Since becoming MP, Yadav has launched several rural-centric initiatives in Alwar.
Most notable among them is the Alwar Sansad Khel Utsav, which included rural sports like kabaddi and kho-kho, concluding with a 'Tiger Marathon' in the city stadium. Over 1 lakh youth participated across villages....
