'Censorship is in itself a wrong idea for a country like India'
India, June 7 -- After making rounds at film festivals, writer-lyricist Varun Grover's 2022 directorial debut Kiss is finally available to stream in India.
The short film, which stars Shubhrajyoti Barat, Swanand Kirke and Adarsh Gourav, explores censorship in cinema. Speaking about the film, Varun says, "I don't think giving a list of things that should change will change things. Censorship in itself is a wrong idea for a country like ours."
The 45-year-old goes on to assert, "For a democracy, there should not be censorship. The name of our film body is the Central Board of Film Certification, not censorship. They are supposed to certify a film but are also censoring and that should not be the case. That shouldn't be the norm."
Was there a specific instance that led to the film's creation? "Somewhere around 2018, there was a news item that the censor board had asked the makers of a film to reduce a kissing scene from 22 seconds to 11 seconds," Varun explains. "That made me wonder, 'Who are these people who are cutting down kissing scenes by seconds?'" he ends....
