'577 MCM Yamuna water for Raj soon, DPR in 6 months'
Jaipur, Jan. 31 -- The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Yamuna water transfer project to Rajasthan will be prepared within six months, while the state will receive an allocation of 577 million cubic metres (MCM) of Yamuna water during the monsoon period, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha.
Replying to a starred question, Union Jal Shakti minister CR Patil said Rajasthan and Haryana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the joint preparation of the DPR for a project to transfer Yamuna water from the Hathnikund Barrage to water-scarce districts of Rajasthan, including Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu, through underground pipelines.
As per the decision of the Upper Yamuna River Board, Rajasthan has been allocated 577 MCM of Yamuna water for the period from July to October. The Minister clarified that no Yamuna water is allocated to Rajasthan from Hathnikund Barrage during the November to June period.
He said that under Phase-I of the proposed project, up to 577 MCM of water will be transferred through underground pipelines during the monsoon months for drinking water supply and other essential requirements, after Haryana utilises the full capacity of Western Yamuna Canal, including Delhi's share.
The minister informed the House that both Rajasthan and Haryana have constituted task forces for the project. Rajasthan has already engaged a consultant for preparation of the DPR through a work order issued on July 25, 2025, with a clear timeline of six months for submission.
The Centre said completion of the DPR will pave the way for implementation of the project, which is expected to significantly ease drinking water shortages in several districts....
