Villagers beat Mentally ill man in Pilibhit, SHO suspended
MEERUT, Aug. 9 -- A 32-year-old mentally ill man was tied up and brutally beaten by a mob of villagers in Bithoura Kalan village under the Gajraula police station area of Pilibhit on Thursday night, after being mistaken for a thief.
The incident, caught on video and widely circulated on social media, led to the immediate suspension of Gajraula SHO over alleged negligence.
The incident occurred around 1 am when villagers caught Raju from Dalelganj village in the Jehanabad area. Suspecting him of theft, they tied him to a pole with ropes and beat him with sticks.
A bystander alerted the police, rescued the man and took him to a hospital. The police, however, did not inform senior officers.
SP Abhishek Yadav confirmed that investigations found Raju to be mentally ill. "Despite knowing his condition, some villagers assaulted him severely. Strict action will be taken against those involved," the SP said.
He further stated that SHO Jagdeep Malik has been suspended with immediate effect, adding that the culprits will face strict legal action....
