Gurugram, June 18 -- District traffic police are pushing for the reopening of long-closed underground non-motorised transport (NMT) lanes at Rajiv Chowk to ease traffic congestion and ensure pedestrian safety. These three interconnected lanes on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway were shut after an auto driver drowned in a waterlogged section in 2021. ACP (highway traffic) Satyapal said discussions have been held with NHAI and GMDA to repair and reopen the lanes post-monsoon on a trial basis. "The NMTs are in poor shape, and repair is up to NHAI," he said, noting that most commuters are unaware of the lanes' existence. Col. (retd) Rameshwar Dass Singhal of GMDA said NHAI will handle cleaning and lighting, while vendors may be stationed inside to improve safety. "Deployment of police and continuous monitoring will be needed," he added. Commuters said crossing the chowk is risky due to heavy traffic, illegal vendors, and buses clogging footpaths. NHAI confirmed plans to restore lighting and fixtures. The GMDA is also studying redesign options for the intersection, which sees up to 2.5 lakh vehicles daily.
