Traffic trials kick off on IGIA-Dwarka e-way link
India, May 30 -- Commuters heading to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and those travelling to Mahipalpur from Gurugram can now take the Dwarka Expressway corridor to reach IGIA in 25 minutes from the cloverleaf near the expressway, officials, aware of the matter, said on Thursday.
The tunnel network on the high-speed corridor was opened for a traffic trial by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday, from noon to 3pm, NHAI officials said.
The under-construction tunnel network is likely to become operational on June 5, the NHAI officials cited above, added.
On Thursday, more than 100 traffic marshals, officials of project contractor J Kumar Infra, NHAI and Delhi traffic police personnel were deployed to monitor the first day of the trial, which is expected to continue for a few days.
NHAI officials said that the tunnel network is likely to be formally opened for traffic on June 5, after taking into consideration the data emerging from the traffic trial.
According to NHAI officials, the underpasses that were opened for the traffic trial included a 3.6km shallow tunnel connecting Dwarka to IGIA through the airport underpasses (around 2.5km) and vice versa. The shallow tunnel allowed commuters to move towards Gurugram using another connecting tunnel from Dwarka. Commuters can use the underpass and reach Gurugram from Terminal 3 of IGIA, they said.
The traffic trial at the tunnels began at noon with highway officials removing the barriers and directing commuters to use the tunnels going towards the airport and Gurugram.
A team from HT, which visited both the tunnels found that commuters were not aware of the ongoing trial and near the mouth of the tunnel, could be seen seeking information from the traffic marshals.
Meanwhile, heavy trucks and two-wheelers were not allowed to enter the tunnels. CCTV cameras, fire safety equipment and fans have been installed inside the tunnels to monitor traffic movement.
The maximum speed permitted inside the tunnels is 60kmph or 80kmph, depending on the stretch, NHAI officials said.
Commuters, after reaching the airport, can also take a U-turn if they intend to return to the Dwarka Expressway or take a detour to move to the left extreme of the tunnel-and drive one kilometre-to reach NH48. From there, commuters can move towards their destinations at Sirhaul and Gurugram.
"We had deployed 100 traffic marshals and other staff to guide commuters and ensure that they can travel safely. Cameras have been installed and the entire tunnel network is being monitored during the trial," said Akash Padhi, project director, NHAI, who added that traffic data will be studied to take required remedial measure, if any....
